I love this story (used bookstore? check! cat? check!) And this line in particular is enchanting: "He could never quite relate what had happened next, not in any linear way, but somehow his wanting a simple bookend had brought Cat into being."
Just as I can see the specks of dust in my imagination reading this story, the air of this story itself seems filled with sweet cake dust. And maybe just a spot of tea.
